Lungs

Gabe's lungs are causing all kinds of problems. His CO2 level was up again, and on an xray they could see signs of stress on the lungs. They're not sure if it is an infection of the lungs or the PDA medicine is causing problems. The doctor decided to put Gabe on a different ventilation machine called an oscillator. This gives him short fast breaths (Dan says it sounds like a train) to keep his lungs open. There can be side effects for using this so they said they may have to switch him back and forth between the two types of ventilators. He told us that Gabe isn't unstable, but he's not stable like he was. They are keeping a very close eye on him. So close, that one of the nurses was camped outside of his door all night monitoring him. It's good to know she's there, but bad to know that she needs to be there.

Pray that his lungs heal and mature into healthy lungs, and the PDA will close VERY soon. It seems like the PDA keeps causing problems.

By the way... the blue light is back on. Gabe was concerned he was still too pale for summer;)

I am praying for Baby Gabe every chance I get. I am keeping your family in my daily prayers. My mom and I have also called in a prayer request at our church and have many people praying for you. Please let me know if you need ANYTHING!

  3. They had said there would be ups and downs. I am cheering him on, praying and loving him from here. And also for you two too. Sounds like he has a new cousin that's great. Love Nana Mann

  7. Hey guys,

I'm not sure if you remember me- Dan, it's Missy (hofer) Adam now.... :) Mom told me what you guys were going through. Reading your blog was surreal b/c I know about everything you're talking about when you refer to medical things- our son was on ECMO (heart/lung bypass) and in the NICU for a couple months. I'm familiar with pda, too- our son's actually closed up finally on its own, thankfully, as he had other issues at the time (meconium aspiration, pulmonary hypotension, sepsis). Anyway, we lived at the NICU and practically slept there while he was on ECMO so we know what you are going through- we're in the KC area and if you ever want to meet for supper some night just to refresh yourselves and take a break let us know- you might eventually get to that point of needing a break once he's stable and you feel okay doing that...I'm not sure how far away you guys are from us? Our old blog with Jack was jacksonadam@blogspot.com (started in June when Jack was born) and our new one is listed on my profile. Anyway, feel free to email me: melissabeth26@Yahoo.com

I know how it feels to wait a long time to hold your baby- and how emotional and special that is. :) I'm so glad you got to hold him! It was several weeks before we could and then I had to be separated again from him because I was sick. It is so hard emotionally and know I am praying for you, Shannon! I know it did so much for little Gabe to have his mama holding him!!!

I'd love to know where you guys are and how we can help you out if we're close, whether through food (snacks to heat up at the NICU, etc.) or whatever is something that would help- this sorta thing is close to our hearts!! And we are praying- our son is a total testament to the power of prayer and we are thinking of you guys often. :) Much love to you- keep looking up and know tons are thinking of you and praying.
